The XLRI-IIMC Sports Meet

In the early 1970s, the students of two of India’s oldest B-Schools – XLRI Jamshedpur and IIM Calcutta, felt the need for an interaction, a lasting relationship that would facilitate an exchange of ideas and thoughts and also to have some fun.

So, the students planned an annual rendezvous wherein they would participate in academic seminars, presentations and some sports over a weekend in November. Over the years, what was originally included along the sidelines to generate interest and have fun – sports – started taking centre stage.

Now, come rain or shine, every year in September or October, the students of the two Institutes meet at either of the Campuses in what has been dubbed the “mother of all sports meets” – XLRI–IIM-C Sports Meet. The XLRI–IIM-C Meet has always generated so much passion and fun, which is best reflected when one queries any alumni of the two Institutes on what he/she remembers vividly from his/her Campus days.

The venue alternates between Jamshedpur and Calcutta. The meet consists of a colourful canvas of 21 sports events – and this includes homegrown events such as Frisball – and a Sports Quiz, which has traditionally been the curtain raiser.

The event, one of its kind and one of the oldest in the postgraduate academic circuit of the country, marches majestically past its Silver Jubilee. This year the event has been scheduled for September 20 and 21, and it is the turn of IIM Calcutta to host it this year.
The winning team will take home a special trophy. The Sportsman and Sportswoman of the series are given special awards. This includes a specially designed trophy and prizes for the Best Sportsman and Sportswoman of XLRI and IIM Calcutta.
