Placements: big bang back again

The Financial Express, March 19, 2005

It’s placement season once again and business schools are putting their best foot forward. While placements are in full swing at the IIMs, at other premier institutes like Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, and Xavier Institute of Management (XIM), Bhubaneswar, they are already over. Early indications in the placements scene this year suggest that the finance and banking sector have made a strong comeback. Foreign job offers have also gone up and recruiters are offering higher pay packets. All these augur well for B-schools which love to flaunt the figures to attract the best brains to their campus.

However, despite the fact that foreign postings are close to the hearts of B-schools, there are some within campuses who are not enthused. Says Madhukar Shukla, professor of strategic management at XLRI: “It’s a pity that B-schools do not showcase the recuitment drive of home-grown multinationals the way they showcase a Barclays or Lehman Brother. Moreover, foreign postings offered by many multinationals are often in far flung places like some east European country. However, they are still rated highly,” he says.

At its campus recruitment programme (CRP) this year, XLRI had one foreign job offer and that too from a first time visitor to its campus—Mittal Steel which offered a compensation of $80,000 for a recruit in east Europe.
